Description

This Strawberry French Toast Casserole is a delightful and easy-to-make breakfast or brunch option. It features layers of bread, fresh strawberries, and a sweet custard, baked until golden and bubbly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (16 ounces) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for greasing the pan)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Arrange half of the bread cubes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Scatter half of the sliced strawberries over the bread.
  4. Repeat with the remaining bread cubes and strawberries.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and strawberries in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to ensure it’s fully saturated with the custard.
  7. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and uncover.
  10. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  11. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup, if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, use day-old bread as it absorbs the custard better.
  • You can prepare this casserole the night before and bake it in the morning for a quick and impressive breakfast.
  • Feel free to add other berries like blueberries or raspberries for variety.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
