Description

A classic grilled sandwich featuring a savory beef patty, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese, all nestled between slices of toasted rye bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef, 80/20 lean
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized and tender, about 20-25 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. While onions cook, form ground beef into four equal patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high in the same skillet. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness, or until desired doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  4. Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.
  5. Place four slices of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet over medium heat.
  6. Top each bread slice with a beef patty, a generous spoonful of caramelized onions, and one slice of Swiss cheese.
  7. Place the remaining four slices of bread, butter-side up, on top of the cheese.
  8. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove from skillet, cut in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of beef broth or a pinch of sugar to the onions while they caramelize.
  • You can use other types of cheese like cheddar or provolone if you prefer.
  • Ensure your skillet is not too hot when grilling the sandwiches to prevent burning the bread before the cheese melts.
