Description

These classic Spritz cookies are buttery, tender, and perfect for any occasion. They are easy to make and can be customized with various colors and decorations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or decorations (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg yolk and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. If desired, divide the dough into separate bowls and mix in food coloring to create different colors.
  6. Load the dough into a cookie press fitted with your desired disc. Press cookies onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between each cookie.
  7. Decorate with sprinkles, if using.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Remove from oven and transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Ensure your butter is truly softened for the best texture.
  • Do not grease your baking sheets; the cookies need to stick slightly to the pan to hold their shape when pressed.
  • If the dough is too stiff, add a teaspoon of milk at a time until it’s workable.
  • If the dough is too soft, chill it for 15-30 minutes.
  • Spritz cookies are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
