Description

A comforting and cheesy casserole featuring tender broccoli florets baked in a creamy sauce, topped with a crispy breadcrumb topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Steam or boil broccoli florets until tender-crisp, about 3-5 minutes. Drain well.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt 1/4 cup butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Remove from heat.
  7. Add shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce and stir until melted and smooth.
  8. Gently fold in the cooked broccoli florets.
  9. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  10. In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs and 2 tablespoons melted butter. Sprinkle evenly over the casserole.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
  12. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a blend of cheeses like cheddar and Gruyere.
  • Add cooked, diced chicken or ham for a heartier meal.
  • Prepare the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
  • You can use frozen broccoli, just ensure it’s thawed and well-drained before adding to the sauce.
